Interview
So my classmates and i had an interview with (*drumroll*) The developer of the vr game Proton War, Jonathan Cummings. Heres how it went...
questions were asked and they were answered by Mr.Cummings.
I've always known that your surrounding as well as people have a big influence on both your life and choice/decisions. In our interview from the pro( Jonathan Cummings) his choice of becoming a game developer was influenced by his father. "I had always been around computers...my dad was a programmer when i was a kid, and taught me how to program...and well, games are cool, and fascinating".
Games are cool and Fascinating..if i wasn't taking this class(media studies) i wouldn't have agreed with him but i do. Games are indeed fascinating. Some may not agree but i think that games have a purpose in everyones life. Its purpose could be for escapism, a job, education, entertainment and so on. Its really interesting. I wasn't at all surprised to find that this pro became a pro😂 by influences from his dad and playing game. It was the fact that he was NOT the stereotypical game developer i had envisioned -you know, sickly overweight or underweight with braces and nerd glasses, along with the typical dull yet scratchy voice._. I was also surprise to find that game developers don't just stay coped up in a dark room forever, once in a while they have to see the sun..the game documentary i watched is very bias-_- It was refreshing to know that you don't have to be a genius to become a pro, but "..to have passion for what you are doing. With passion and dedication you can do anything."
Like ive mentioned before Jonathan Cummings is the developer of the vr game Proton War. To find out that the game was still in development was a shock to me. I had assumed it was completed. "Proton war has been in development for about 2 and a half years. It is still in early access...as with all the arts it will be done when its done." I had to look up his game again because i couldn't believe it was still in development😂 and Even if my outdated device that needs an upgrade won't allow me to play the game it looks pretty cool. Its definitely something i would like to play. [Pictures from proton war link]
Because of curiousity the question:
Where did you get your inspiration? Was asked. It was interesting to find that it came from a company called the ID Software and a programmer John Carmack. Jonathan Cummings reply was "i grew up play ID software games; commander keen, Doom, Quake...there was something so passionate about the way they made games, it inspired me from a very early age." It wasn't a surprise that there were challenges he had faced. "The biggest challenge for me has been marketing, getting people to know about your game." Its expected to go through this type of challenge in the gaming industry, especially when you need to compete against other new games. I can understand how hard it is to create a game that captures the attention of your consumer or divert their attention from other games to yours. TuT [ if that makes sence] " i feel like you could spend 50% of all your time just on marketing and it still wouldnt be enough. Its very hard to break through these days..with the amount of games being made. "
"I have some concerns about how larger deal with staff, and feel that people need to take a personal issue such as depression and stress much more seriously, it is very common in the industry." This very comment from Jonathan Cummings was a major highlight for me. Depression is a very serious thing and can understand how this is a concern for Mr.Cummings. Those big game companies should treat personal issuez seriously rather than being focus on making money. I also didnt think game developers would fall into depression- reasons to why this was a major highlight.
This interview with the pro helped me alot with coming to understand life as a game developer. Its not a straight path, theres bends and turns you need to make and bump/obstacles you will face. Plus one things clear - You are capable to do anything, even if the whole world is against you. You are unstoppable. (>i feel like i just went off topic😂ah well)
And its alot better getting info from the real thing and not a documentary (its not acurate)-_-

Try discussing your response to Mr. Cummings responses? did you know you didn't need coding to create a game? why?
