Game Genres

my developing understandings around gaming genre.
- how we classify genre gaming
-what are some of the challenges

'A
video game genre is a classification assigned to a video game based on its gameplay interaction rather than visual or narrative differences...is defined by a set of gameplay challenges and are classified independently of their setting or game-world content, unlike other works of fiction such as films or books. '
From what I've learned, there are a lot of genres in gaming and because of this codes and conventions are used to help players identify their genres. Codes and conventions are used together in any study of genre - it's not enough to discuss to a technical codes used such as camera work, without saying how it is conventionally used in a genre. Mark J.P Wolf says ''Video game genre study differs markedly from literacy or film genre study due to the direct and active participation of the audience.''
i think looking for conventions that are typically used to convey a genre is easier i.e combat, shooting, horror or action.

Challenges?
Well, like i said before there's alot of genres in gaming. In one game there can be many genres that overlap each other that it can be difficult to identify a specific genre- this how sub-genres are created. Take Call of Duty for example, it can fall under the category of Shooting, Action or Adventure.

- Escape
These are games where the goal is to actually escape from pursuers or maybe escape from a room or something. The player is either constantly being pursued or is just trying to find the necessary keys or objects needed to escape from the room. These games usually end when the player escapes from the room or the end or the player is able to avoid conflict by entering a safe place.
